Douglas B. Armbruster

Independent Candidate for Regina Public School Board

Subdivision 6

As a veteran in municipal politics, I bring a wealth of experience and knowledge with me to the boardroom from both my time with the Town of Raymore and with Horizon School Division #205.

My real strength is found at home, where I have been married for 22 years to an educator with Regina Public Schools and I am the proud parent of a child in Grade 4 attending school in Regina Public. Building a stronger and more robust education system for my family and the rest of the families that have entrusted me with their support is my enduring why.

Education is in my blood. I have studied and earned a Bachelor and a Masters degree. I love to teach, to research, and to continue in my life-long learning. I have listened and learned from the teachers in my life - my late grandmother, my wife and my sister-in-law to name just a few - and many of my family and friends have shared the joy of trusteeship with me.

Community building and service fill my cup! I am a volleyball coach, have volunteered as an SCC member and chairperson, have been a director of the local Fire Cooperative, am a past associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, chaired the Raymore Arena/Pool Board, and served as the Emergency Management Officer for both the Town of Raymore and the Rural Municipality of Mount Hope #279. I am always willing to serve my community in whatever way I can.

Student Success Is My Priority

As a Trustee candidate for the Regina Public School Board, I am dedicated to ensuring every child in Regina Public Schools has access to an education that prepares them for success—academically, socially, and emotionally. My learning platform is built on three key pillars:

Core Curriculum & Outcome-Based Learning
I believe in a robust, outcome-based curriculum that prioritizes essential learning areas, including:

  • Literacy (Language Arts)

  • Numeracy (Mathematics)

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

  • Social Studies, with Indigenous Studies integrated at every level

  • Health Education

  • Arts Education

  • Physical Education

These subjects form the foundation of a well-rounded education and must be properly funded and supported. I will advocate for investments in instructional methods and assessments that ensure students not only meet academic benchmarks but also thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Supporting Indigenous Education & Land-Based Learning
I am a strong supporter of the Inspiring Success: First Nations and Métis PreK-12 Education Policy Frameworkand have had the privilege of learning directly from Indigenous leaders, elders, and educators. I am committed to working in partnership with First Nations and Métis communities to ensure that education in our schools reflects the needs and aspirations of Indigenous students while enriching the education of all learners.

I also believe that land-based learning is essential in cultivating a deeper connection to the environment, culture, and community. This approach nurtures the whole child and aligns with curricular outcomes, providing a meaningful learning experience for students.

Budget Accountability & Prioritization
I will advocate for finding efficiencies in the budget to make sure that our core curriculum and critical learning initiatives are funded properly—especially for our youngest learners. By carefully managing resources and focusing on what matters most, I believe we can deliver an excellent education without compromising quality or cutting corners. This approach will ensure that every dollar invested in our schools has the greatest possible impact on student outcomes.

Class Sizes and Complexity Are Barriers We Must Not Only Talk About, But Address Immediately

As a experienced school board trustee, I understand the increasing challenges facing our school division as our city grows and student needs become more complex. The rapid rise in enrollment, combined with a diverse set of educational demands, requires immediate and thoughtful action to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Reducing Class Sizes for Better Learning Outcomes

Our classrooms are beyond crowded, making it almost impossible for our teachers to give each student the individual attention they deserve. Smaller class sizes lead to better academic performance, improved student behavior, and more effective classroom management. By advocating for increased funding and resources, I am committed to reducing class sizes, ensuring that your child receives the personalized instruction necessary for success.

Addressing the Complexity of Modern Education

With the rise of special education needs, mental health challenges, and language and cultural diversity in our schools, our education system faces unprecedented complexity. As a trustee, I will prioritize the implementation of comprehensive classroom supports, ensuring that students with intensive needs have access to the resources they require. This includes more educational assistants, counselors, and specialized supports such as occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, psychologists, elders and other necessary help our students so desperately need.

Planning for a Growing and Diverse City

The expansion of our city requires long-term educational planning. I will work diligently to advocate for new school construction in high-growth areas and ensure that existing schools receive the funding necessary for maintenance and expansion. We need strategic investments to prevent overcrowding and to meet the needs of every child.

Why This Matters

Every child deserves an education that meets their unique needs, regardless of the size of their classroom or the complexity of their challenges. As your Trustee, I will advocate for policies and funding that prioritize smaller class sizes, more classroom supports, and long-term planning to ensure a bright future for our students and our community.

Together, we can build an education system that works for all students, staff, and schools..

Why Choose Me?

Your Child's Success Is My Number One Priority

Every student deserves to have a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, science, technology, physical education, arts education, and physical and applied arts. The focus has to be on learning. We need to tune in to education, and tune out the rest of the noise.

Your Child Matters to Me

Every student deserves to have an equitable and robust education and school experience. I will work every day to ensure that your family matters in Regina Public Schools.

Your Child's Education Deserves to be Properly Funded

Class size and complexity is a real issue that needs to be addressed first and foremost by advocating for funding that can be used for exactly what it is intended for. I will ensure that we spent every cent of your tax dollars wisely, and that our projects and programs focus on educational outcomes and student success. Boards of Education need to safeguard the funds entrusted to them and budget accordingly. Your student deserves to see the funding received on their behalf impacting their classroom, their teacher, and their school.

Your Voice Will Be Heard

Your voice will come with me to the board table, whether I agree with you or not. Your opinion matters to me. I will listen, I will hear you, and I will speak on your behalf.

I have served on numerous boards and committees throughout my time as a Town Councillor and as a School Board Trustee, and have developed skills in Robert's Rules of Order, Policy Governance, Educational Governance, and have the ability to use those skills effectively in the boardroom. Skills like this lead to everyone having a voice at the table, so your voice comes to the table every single meeting whether I agree with you or not. The Regina Public School Division needs strong visionary leadership as they move forward in difficult and uncertain educational times.

I Will Work For You As the Voice of Reason

You need to have a trustee at the table who is able to see both sides, and work to find the best way without polarizing the issues. I want to be a voice of reason at the Board table. There is always a way to get the work done in a way that is best for our students, and we need to listen to each other, even those who may disagree with us. Debate and discussion is important! In the end, the will of the Board always stands, and I will always support the will of the Board, even if I may personally disagree with it. A strong board is a unified board.

I Have The Experience Needed To Make Change Now

After over 5 years as a Councillor for the Town of Raymore, 3.5 years as a Trustee with the Horizon School Division #205, and countless professional development sessions and training, I have the skill and abilities necessary to step into the boardroom and be effective immediately. Our education system is in crisis, time is of the essence, and I am ready to serve.

Personal Statement

As a candidate for Regina Public School Division Subdivision 6 Trustee, I firmly believe in respecting all individuals, regardless of their faith, colour, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. My commitment is to uphold a reasonable approach in all matters concerning our students, ensuring that every decision is made with fairness, inclusivity, and the best interests of our children at heart. Every child matters, every family matters, every school matters, every teacher matters, and every community matters.

As an independent candidate, I do not represent any membership or organization. Any characterization otherwise is false. Any endorsement of my campaign by any organization or individual is their own personal choice and not in any way my endorsement of their political views.
